Regis Prograis Targets Devin Haney For December
Unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15KOs) is currently looking for a dance partner for his next bout. Once thought to possibly be fighting former IBF junior lightweight and current WBC interim lightweight champ Joesph “Jojo” Diaz, an opportunity for Diaz to face stablemate Ryan Garcia intervened.
However, Garcia sustained a serious hand injury that required surgery ultimately postponing their fight indefinitely. Upon hearing the news, Haney immediately called out Diaz for a fight. Scheduled to return to the squared circle on December 3, a lack of big fights at lightweight has the young champion contemplating a move up in weight for his next bout.

If he indeed goes through with the idea of heading north in weight, the junior welterweight division would be his temporary destination. It also appears that he has a very formidable opponent at the weight ready and willing to knuckle up. According to Sports Illustrated, former WBA Junior welterweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (26-1, 22KOs) is ready and willing to step in and fight Haney on December 3.
While this fight happening in December is highly unlikely, it would be a great matchup. Both men have very good skill sets and a desire to be the best. Haney is a slick boxer with a good jab and tremendous footwork. Meanwhile, Prograis is a power puncher with a penchant for punishment, with a skill set not to be overlooked.
Both men have been calling for big marquee fights with little to no success. While this matchup might be viewed as too much of a step up for Haney, I’m sure he’d feel otherwise. The question for him would be “does the reward outweigh the risk?” If it does then he may instruct his co-promoter Eddie Hearn to make the fight.
Let’s hope that it does happen whether this year or in 2022. If not, there’s a bright spot for Prograis. If Mikey Garcia is victorious against Sandor Martin on October 16, there’s a real possibility that he and Prograis will fight in 2022.
