‘Naomi’: Ava DuVernay’s CW Series Releases a First Super(man) Look

Are you ready to meet Naomi? Based on the DC Comics character created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell, we finally have our first look at the TV adaptation of the title, thanks to the DC FanDome virtual event.

In the minute long clip, Naomi (Kaci Walfall) is about to make a presentation in class when she gets a text from a friend saying, “Wild stunt happening in the square!” That’s followed by another text featuring two Superman symbols and a shocked emoji. Saying she needs this for her “site,” Naomi runs out, grabs her skateboard, and heads out to the fight that’s happening in town… Only to collapse before she even gets there. With a brief glimpse of Superman flying away overhead, Naomi falls unconscious, and we’re left with the promise that the series is coming in 2022.

With some variations, this is actually how Naomi was introduced in the comics all the way back in [checks notes] 2019. Huh. Not that long ago, so there are plenty of different places for the show to go. But suffice to say superhero fangirl Naomi doesn’t have a lot of experience seeing superheroes, despite living in the DC Universe… Even if she’s about to become very much embroiled with them.

The show comes from Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay and Arrow‘s Jill Blankenship. As described by Warner Bros’ synopsis, “Naomi follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny. As Naomi journeys to the heights of the Multiverse in search of answers, what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.”

What’s most interesting about this description is that like with the comics, Naomi has the opportunity to bring together a lot of the shows in the Arrow-verse, and portray a hero who isn’t a grim vigilante or seasoned fighter; rather, just a girl with a blog.

Watch the clip above, and see if you can put the pieces together before the show premieres in 2022.
