A federal indictment filed in Grand Rapids names three Portage men and a Kalamazoo man after a claim of a scheme involving selling rented textbooks from Amazon.
A 36-year-old Portage man was arrested Thursday and faces charges of mail fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property, aggravated identity theft and making false statements to the FBI.
Between January 2016 and March 2021, the man rented thousands of books from Amazon’s textbook rental program then turned around and sold them, according to the indictment.
Two other Portage men and a Kalamazoo man were named in the indictment, but have not been arrested as of Oct. 16.
The indictment claims the 36-year-old created several Amazon accounts, and on several cases claimed he never received the books sent to him or got something else instead.
The man faces 20 years in prison for each case of mail fraud, 10 years for interstate transportation of stolen property and five years for false statements to the FBI.
