Michael Caine clarifies statement on retiring after latest film

Michael Caine has not retired from acting just yet.

“I haven’t retired and not a lot of people know that,” the 88-year-old actor tweeted on Saturday — one day after telling BBC Radio’s “Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review” that “Best Sellers” would be his last film.

“Funnily enough, it has turned out to be my last part, really,” the British actor said of the 2021 film, adding that he hasn’t worked “for two years” and has a “spine problem” that affects his ability to walk.

Host Simon Mayo pressed the two-time Oscar winner further to confirm that “Best Sellers” would be his last film.

“I think it would be, yeah. I don’t have any… there haven’t been any offers, obviously, for two years because nobody’s been making any movies that I wanna do, but also I’m 88,” Caine shared. “There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88, you know?”

In addition to his tweet, the actor told Variety, “Regarding retirement, I’ve spent over 50 years getting up at 6 a.m. to make movies, and I’m not getting rid of my alarm clock!”

The outlet also reported Caine is “reviewing two scripts” as potential future projects.

Oddly enough, Caine spoke about avoiding retirement with Variety just two months earlier in August.

“I never did retire. I mean I’m 88 – people are not knocking at my door trying to give me a script. But occasionally there is a part,” he said at the time.

Caine reflected on how retiring at an earlier age would have affected his acting career, adding, “If I retired at 65, I would never have won an Academy Award [for ‘Cider House Rules’], I would never have done a picture with Jack Nicholson and would not have done all those [Batman] movies with Christopher Nolan.”
