Wisconsin basketball recruiting: 2022 big from Canada joins women’s hoops class

On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball team received their fourth commitment of the 2022 recruiting class. 2022 big Serah Williams (Toronto, ON) out of Niagara (Niagara Falls, ON) Prep announced on Instagram that she will be the latest player to commit to new coach Marisa Moseley.

Williams, who is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., moved to Toronto in 2018 to play in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association to get a level up in competition from her previous school in Ontario. Standing at 6-foot-4, Williams needed to play against opponents who were her size and she found that after moving to Niagara Prep.

Her bio on Niagara Prep’s website gives a little insight into her skillset:

She has worked very hard on her perimeter skills to complement her already solid post-game. Serah has extended her shooting to outside the three point line and is now a triple threat scorer. She will be counted on to protect the rim and be a defensive leader.

As far as I can tell, Niagara Prep is kind of a basketball academy that has partnered with a local high school (AN Myer Secondary School) to provide some of the academic structure. If anyone is more familiar with Canadian prep sports, please correct me in the comments.

For the 2019-2020 season (last one she played due to COVID), Williams averaged 9.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg (4.3 orpg), 2.4 bpg and 2.2 spg while shooting 42% from the field and 70% from the free throw line. She shows good instincts when rebounding the ball and can play defense all the way out to the three point line, even staying with smaller, quicker guards on occasion.

Williams definitely has some post moves and it will be interesting to see how much she has improved her long range shot since she only attempted three threes last season.

Williams joins Lily Krahn, Tessa Towers and Savannah White in the 2022 group for the Badgers, Moseley’s first full class as UW head coach.
