Doom Patrol, the weirdest, most creative superhero show on TV, has officially been renewed for Season 4 by HBO Max, as just revealed at the DC FanDome virtual event. Not only that, but the streamer also released a new mid-season trailer for the show’s third season, teasing the final four episodes.

This is good news for anyone worried they wouldn’t get to see another season of the Doom Patrol characters essentially refusing to be superheroes; or at least, only fighting evil if it doesn’t agree to leave them alone to rot and die. That, in essence, is the premise of the show: a team that doesn’t want to be a team fighting evil they don’t want to fight. Instead, they’re much more focused on how monstrous they may or may not be, and whether they’re even human anymore.

Sounds grim, right? It’s not… The show is actually also extremely funny, and the clash of tones is ably highlighted in the trailer, which recaps that Timothy Dalton’s former forced father figure has died (spoiler: they hated him), and they’re on their own now. Only, they aren’t, thanks to Michelle Gomez’s Madame Rouge, a fantastic addition to the series who is trying very, very hard to get these malcontents to do literally anything.

The show also stars Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, and Joivan Wade. And as they enter the second part of Season 3, they’re going directly against the surreal menace of the Sisterhood of Dada. Meanwhile, Fraser’s Robotman is grappling with being a grandfather, despite also being only a human brain in an unfeeling tin suit; Bomer’s Negative Man has something very wrong with the alien creature that lives in his body; Diane Guerrero’s Crazy Jane is once again grappling with the multiple personalities in her head, this time with puppets; Jovian Wade’s Cyborg is starting to wonder whether he needs his robotic implants, after all; and though it’s not seen in the trailer, April Bowlby’s Rita is starting to step up in Dalton’s absence.

Season 3 will continue to stream Thursdays on HBO Max until November 11. No premiere date has been announced for Season 4, but it’s safe to assume some time next year.
