Player prowl: Panthers can beef up pass rush with Vikings' Danielle Hunter

Vikings, not panthers, are usually the ones associated with raiding and pillaging. Well, not this week.

We’re turning the tables and having the Carolina Panthers raid the Minnesota Vikings for one of their players. Let’s look at our options.

Two guys on offense immediately catch our eye, with running back Dalvin Cook and wide receiver Justin Jefferson. But do the Panthers need another oft-injured rusher and another talented wideout their quarterback can’t see downfield?

How about on defense?

Defensive tackle Michael Pierce could help plug the middle with Derrick Brown. Linebacker Eric Kendricks could help fill a void in the middle as well. And deeper out, strong safety Harrison Smith would be a nice fit alongside Jeremy Chinn.

But, instead, we’re coming out of Vikings’ territory with defensive end Danielle Hunter. Because if pass rushers were built in a laboratory, they’d come out looking like Julius Peppers . . . then Myles Garrett . . . then Danielle Hunter.

The 6-foot-5, 263-pounder never had question marks surrounding his frame, athleticism and potential. It was just always a matter of if that frame and athleticism would meet skill and technique on the way in filling that potential.

Spoiler: They all met.

Hunter, the 2015 third-rounder, became a wrecking ball of a defender, perhaps quicker than many believed. He recorded 6.0 sacks in his rookie campaign, where he also played in 14 games and started just one.

He’d follow that with 12.5 sacks in 2016, 7.0 in 2017 and 14.5 in each of the past two campaigns. Plus, he’s already up to 6.0 through fives games in 2021.

Oh, and did we mention he’s still only 26 years old? Yeah, the package came together quickly for Hunter and he’s undoubtedly one of the most dangerous and versatile ends in the game.

Pit him next to Brian Burns, Haason Reddick, Yetur Gross-Matos and Morgan Fox, please.

So, did we come out with the choice?
