The Family Health Center in Kalamazoo was hosting a free Women's Health Expo Saturday to help women in the community check on their health needs.

Mindie Smith, with the Family Health Center, said the expo was a chance for women of all backgrounds to come together and check on the many health needs they may have.

"Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it made us start thinking about the many health needs women have," Smith said. "We decided to host an event to highlight those needs and to provide opportunities for women on how to meet those needs."

Smith said breast cancer was not the only health concern the event would address.

"We know that studies have shown health disparities lead to a decline in health, so it is really important, regardless of age, to have checkups especially for women," Smith said.

The expo was scheduled to run from noon to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Family Health Center’s Patterson Campus, 117 W. Paterson St.

Smith noted the event will be mostly outdoors, so dress accordingly.

More information about the expo is available at the Family Health Center website.
