CUMBY - The Cumby Lady Trojans hosted the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers for the second match between the two teams this season. Cumby won the first match back on Friday, Sept. 24, beating Alba-Golden in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-22.

The Lady Trojans opened the match on a strong note, taking the lead on the opening possession and never allowing Alba-Golden to take a lead in the set. Neely Hammond racked up a number of points early on blocks, helping Cumby build a quick 11-4 lead.

Later in the set it was Ashlyn Hudson who helped pace the way. Hudson had an ace, as well as four kills, to help the Lady Trojans walk away with a 25-17 win in the first set.

The second set started with a bang, as Cumby’s Erin Morgan scored on an ace on just the second possession, setting the tone for the rest of the set. The Lady Trojans went on to score the first 16 points, and in that time span Hudson and Azlyn Hornsby each had four kills, while Morgan had another ace.

Alba-Golden got on the board for the first time to make the score 16-1, although that didn’t slow the Lady Trojans down much. Hammond added another pair of kills and a block, while Hudson had a block of her own and a pair of aces, to help Cumby take the set by a commanding score of 25-4.

The Lady Trojans got out to yet another quick start in the third set, with Hudson and Hammond continuing to lead the way offensively. Alba-Golden called a timeout while trailing 7-2 to try to slow down Cumby’s momentum, but the Lady Trojans continued to dominate.

Heather McCraw joined in on the scoring action, as did Hornsby to help push their lead to 20-10. Alba-Golden finished the set matching the Lady Trojans point-for-point, but Cumby held on, taking the set by a final score of 25-15.

Hudson and Hammond led the way offensively for the entire match, pacing the Lady Trojans in their dominating 3-0 win. Hudson finished with team-high’s in kills (14) and blocks (7) in an allaround great game.

“Ashlyn Hudson guarded the net very well on the third set, block left and right and hitting birthday balls,” head coach Marissa Medrano said.

Just behind her was Hammond who also finished with double-digit kills with 12. Hammond also had seven digs.

Setting things up was Erin Morgan who had a standout performance. Morgan not only had 26 assists, but also four kills and 20 serve points, as she served the entire 16-0 run for Cumby to open the second set.

Leading the team defensively were Kelcie Fite and Savannah Kurn who combined for 17 digs. Fite finished with a team-high nine digs, while Kurn was right behind her with eight. Kaylee Bloyd also contributed five digs.

After finally taking their first district loss to Quinlan Boles last week, this win puts Cumby right back where they want to be to finish the season. The Lady Trojans return home Tuesday for their final home game of the year against Como-Pickton. That game is will also be their Senior Night.
