OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A celebration was held in Oshkosh Friday to honor the Smith School’s recent placement on the National Register of Historical Places.
The Oregon Street school was sold to a development firm in 2019, and they intend to turn the building into apartments while preserving the structure.
“This community has rallied around this school,” project partner Tim Hess said. “You can see a bunch of people are here today to help celebrate, and not every building is historic, and not every historic building can get on the national registry. So, this is an obvious distinction that really says this building is worth of preserving.”
The project is eligible for tax credits because of the new historical designation.
