Saturday BP: Reyes Moronta elects free agency

As does Mike Tauchman.

If I had told you before the season that San Francisco Giants right-handed pitcher Reyes Moronta would be a free agent in October, you probably would not have believed me. But that’s where we are. On Thursday, Moronta — as well as outfielder Mike Tauchman — elected for free agency, which became an option when the Giants designated them for assignment and reassigned them to AAA Sacramento.

There were high hopes for Moronta, who was recovering from a severe arm injury, when the season began. He made the Opening Day roster, but was injured after pitching just four innings. He returned from injury to rehab in Sacramento, and struggled mightily with walks, issuing 26 free passes in 18 innings to accompany an 11.00 ERA.

Needing a spot on the 40-man roster, the Giants DFA’d Moronta shortly before the end of the regular season, and reassigned him to Sacramento after he cleared waivers.

Moronta electing free agency doesn’t mean his Giants tenure is over. He could return to the organization, but he’s now in control of that.
