The sequel looked a lot like the original.
Top-ranked Thurston could only muster a field goal and a touchdown Friday night, but it was enough to defeat eighth-ranked Crater 9-0 in a Class 5A throwback outing at Thurston High School.
The matchup of ranked Midwestern League rivals was a rematch of the 2019 Class 5A championship game, which the Colts won 14-10.
And much like that game two years ago, Friday’s rematch was physical and ruled by defense. The Colts (5-0, 5-0 Midwestern) recorded their third shutout in five games this season as their swarming defense snared four interceptions and held the Comets (5-2, 5-1) to just 75 yards of offense.
In the end, Thurston only needed a 24-yard field goal from Gavin Levesque in the second quarter and a 1-yard touchdown run by Brycen Indell in the third to remain undefeated.
Indell (60) and Gavin Knights (73) combined for 133 rushing yards for the Colts, who finished with just 173 total yards in the game. It was the first time this season Thurston has been held to fewer than 42 points in a game.
The Colts, who have outscored opponents 197-53, need wins in its final two games — versus Ashland and at North Bend — to finish the regular season undefeated and secure the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs.
