The Matildas will host a match on home soil for the first time in 596 days when Sam Kerr leads the team out against Brazil in two friendlies next week.

Australia will take on their Samba rivals at CommBank Stadium on October 23 and 26, with crowds of up to 22,500 able to attend the games.

Kerr, who was nominated for the Ballon d'Or recently, is the headline act for the green and gold among their 23-player squad, while Ellie Carpenter, Emily van Egmond, Kyah Simon and Caitlin Foord return to the national team action.

Injury has seen the likes of Elise Kellond-Knight, Hayley Raso, and Emily Gielnik ruled out of the selection process, while Remy Siemsen and Bryleeh Henry will be looking for their first Matildas cap.

Coach Tony Gustavsson explained he would be using the matches to prepare the team for the 2022 Asian Cup, which will be held in India in January, and with one eye on the 2023 World Cup, which Australia and New Zealand will co-host.

"Preparation is number one," Gustavsson said. "I said that going into the September camp when we played against Ireland, we changed from ‘performance mode’ from the Olympics to ‘preparation mode’ [ahead of India 2022 and Australia/New Zealand 2023].

"That doesn’t mean that we are going to step on the field not trying to win – we are always going to try and win when we play every game – but we are not going to try and win at the expense of our preparations.

"We can’t shy away from tough challenges and tough games. We need to look at this as a long run towards the World Cup in ‘23."
