Green Bay Earns 3-0 Victory Over Colonials

Granger (12), Brown (6) combine for 18 kills without an attack error for RMU

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team continued a three-match road trip Friday with a 3-0 setback to Green Bay at the Kress Center. The Colonials slipped to 9-11 (.450) overall during the 2021 season, including 2-6 (.250) in the Horizon League.
 
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Outside hitters Alexandra Zakutney (14) and Iro Chounta (11) combined for 25 kills for the Phoenix in the sweep, bolstering a Green Bay squad that finished with an even 50 kills in the match to go along with a .283 hitting percentage. The Phoenix also racked up 54 digs, with Chounta finishing with 12 to compile a double-double in the win. Green Bay jumped out to leads of 10-3 and 15-9 in the opening set and withstood an RMU rally to garner a 25-21 victory.
 
THE SECOND SET

The Colonials got off to a better start offensively in the second, getting kills from four different student-athletes, including a pair from fifth-year middle blocker Emma Granger. Tied, 9-9, RMU used a 6-3 spurt to open up a 15-12 advantage after a service ace from Granger. As a team the Colonials finished with a .267 attack percentage in the second set with just four errors in 45 total attempts. Tied, 24-24, Green Bay (10-11 / 5-4 #HLVB) closed out the set by scoring the final three points to garner a 27-25 victory, with Anna Eaton and Chounta providing kills for the Phoenix.
 
PERFECTION
The setback Friday overshadowed an otherwise virtuoso performance offensively from Granger. She led the Colonials with 12 kills in 19 total attempts, compiling a .632 hitting percentage. It marks the sixth time during her illustrious career Granger has finished with an attack percentage of .600 or better, but Friday marked the first time in a match she did not record an attack error. Granger's career best for attack percentage in a match is .706 (13-1-17), which was accomplished in a 3-0 sweep at Saint Francis U (10/30/19). During her career, Granger owns a .324 hitting percentage, which ranks fourth in program history.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Sophomore middle blocker Emma Brown also failed to record an attack error Friday, finishing with six kills in 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. She also led the Colonials with three block assists as RMU finished with eight in the match. Freshman Ashleigh Wallin dished out 19 assists in 20 total attempts, while junior libero Allena Carmody recorded a team-high 13 digs.

RMU concludes its swing through the Midwest Sunday, Oct. 17, with a 3:00 p.m. match against UIC at the Flames Athletic Center.
