Upcoming Couchbase event highlights its approach to a modern database platform

NASDAQ newcomer Couchbase Inc., which went public this summer, claims some of the world’s biggest companies have migrated mission-critical applications to its version of the modernized, distributed database, operating in the growing world of hybrid computing — a system it says traverses legacy relational databases, replacing them easily with modern ones.

On Oct. 20-21, the cloud opportunist will hold its first post-IPO conference, Couchbase ConnectONLINE 2021, where the company will demonstrate to investors and users why the next generation of database modernizers, across all verticals, should be adopting its products. Its features, such as hybrid scalability, differentiate Couchbase’s NoSQL database management architecture from traditional environments, according to the company.

During the event, Couchbase will also delve into future innovations addressing the hefty challenge of managing a digital transformation.

“We’ve focused on ensuring we have the best database in the market, particularly for enterprise applications, and [we’re] really thinking through the architecture that will support applications today and going forward,” said Matt Cain, president and chief executive officer of Couchbase, in a pre-event interview with theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio.

TheCUBE will be covering news from Couchbase’s event, with a special Afterglow Broadcast Oct. 25, featuring industry analysts and practitioners. Register for the free event here. (* Disclosure below.)

A slew of keynotes are expected to be delivered at Couchbase Connect, including CEO Matt Cain and senior vice president of product management and business operations Scott Anderson. On the agenda is how next-gen apps can drive user engagement and create efficiencies, as well as how Couchbase aims to accelerate enterprises through cloud native solutions.

Customer presentations include a PepsiCo Inc. use case for the beverage distributor’s inventory database modernization. And panels over the two-day conference will cover cloud and cross-cloud deployment experiences, as well as how developers are integrating Couchbase and addressing security compliance.

Modernizing legacies

The NoSQL market is projected to reach $22 million by 2026, up from 2,410.5 million in 2018, according to an Allied Market Research study published in early 2020. That’s a compound annual growth rate of a whopping 31.4%.

Upgrades from older database technologies make up a significant part of Allied Market Research’s figures, but it’s the enterprise demand for data analytics that will likely propel NoSQL beyond any particular favored verticals.

Traditional relational databases were never designed to be able to cope with the volume of data, scaling, and frequency of querying as is found in the current digitized economy.

Indeed, the rise of edge devices and the app-driven enterprise requires new database architecture. Running its own cloud is conceivably on the horizon for Couchbase — a logical next step toward a unified platform; and its latest iteration, Couchbase Server 7, adds new relational model support, including SQL transactions, a dynamic data containment model with schema-like structure layers called scopes and collections, and performance and operational improvements that simplify enterprise architectures.
