YOU Boss Reveals the Emotional Storyline We Won’t See in Season 3
Now streaming on Netflix, YOU‘s third season continues to explore how Joe Goldberg’s childhood traumas shaped him into the man he is today. But there’s another important piece of his story that never made it to the screen.
Actor Mark Blum, who recurred in the show’s first season as bookstore owner Mr. Mooney, was set to reprise the pivotal role in a series of flashbacks in Season 3. But that changed when the actor died of complications from the coronavirus in March 2020.
“If you think about how old Young Joe is in these [Season 3] flashbacks, we envisioned a story that led us to when he first met Mr. Mooney,” showrunner Sera Gamble tells TVLine. “We were really excited to explore how that relationship was at the beginning. You see a little of the middle and the end of it in Season 1, so we wanted to tell a story that led him out of those [group homes] that he was in and towards the bookstore. I was really excited about it.”
On a personal note, Gamble adds, “Mark Blum was an extremely talented actor and such a pleasure to work with. We were just devastated. This is the first time I’ve ever experienced having to rewrite a storyline because something so tragic has happened.”

Am I the only one that sees redeeming qualities in Joe? There is much more to the guy that being a killer. I think he is a charming likable guy. He’s made his share of mistakes. He can always make amends to the families of his victims.

Oh boy why does the fact that he is a narcissistic psycopath who never learns from his mistakes go over so many people’s heads?
Joe is definitely extremely mentally disturbed. But the problem with those words thrown around all the time is that they often are incorrectly used to describe someone. Joe is not a psychopath not a narcissist. He’s not a real person obviously and his character is also just make believe but he most resembles anti social disorder, obsessive disorder, attachment disorder, he’s definitely delusional but the biggest reason why people think “he’s redeemable” is because he never wants to kill & often does it after thinking that’s it’s the only choice left and often he does it “in the name of love.” He is also not impulsive. Those traits disqualify Sociopaths, psychopaths and narcissists. Love on the other hand, lacks impulse control and gets a rush after killing so she would be closer to the definition of a sociopath.
I understand him and he sometimes means well. He is in some ways better than Love but In real life a person like him belongs in jail or psychiatric hospital so that society is safer but it makes for great television and I kind of root for him sometimes.
It’s only Joe commits crimes because he’s psychotic due to being locked in a cage for him entire teen years, and he’s not the typical cold blooded killer like Love, for example. Also, because young Joe was extremely innocent, and he started killing because the only mother figure he has ever had, was killed by an abuser. I do not think he would have killed season 3’s love interest because she was a good mother and Joe kills women he sees as having traits of a bad mother (The nurse at the group home before he got adopted and tortured, as well as men who have traits of being an abuser. The story of Joe is emotionally manipulating because he is a “made” psychopath, and not a born one, like Love Quinn. Double that with the fact that he goes out releases people that can put him in jail or expose him. That is not to say that people like him should be put down, and eradicated from the general population.

Joe is not redeemable. He’s a crazy, obsessive stalker and murderer.
The character has to be someone what likable or charming so people want to watch the show.
You clearly did not grasp my analysis.
Make amends to the families of innocent people he’s killed and what? That’s supposed to make what he does ok? He’s a serial killer. There is nothing redeeming about him.

He’s not the typical cold blooded killer like Love, for example, that will kill without a second thought. I think she would have also killed Henry, the baby. The fact that Joe always protects kids is also why the audience can’t help but connect with him. Also, because young Joe was extremely innocent, and he started killing because the only mother figure he has ever had, was killed by an abuser and that’s when the psychosis of protecting women began. (The nurse at the group home before he got adopted and tortured. It wasn’t because he had to protect his mother. (I also do not count him shooting his mom’s boyfriend in defense as a kill.) I do not think he would have killed season 3’s love interest because she was a good mother and Joe kills women he sees as having traits of a bad mother as well as men who have traits of being an abuser. He’s actually not a psychopath and Love is not a born psychopath, she’s a made sociopath. Her narcissistic mother is responsible for Love. Love does have friends and has genuine feelings so she is also not a psychopath, as psychopaths only mimic feelings of concern, love, etc. She’s a sociopath. Possibly borderline personality also.
Love is NOT a made psychopath. The only thing Love went through is having narcissistic parents. “Made psychopaths” are made through extreme physical torture/isolation as Joe endured. Love is a born psychopath whose first kill was due to jealousy, not survival.
