Let’s jump straight into this week’s questions:

Smonroe (Stampede Blue Comments): The D scheme has given up record pass completion percentages to the likes of Brees, Jackson, Wilson and even Minshew. When will Flus abandon that scheme? It’s like he doesn’t understand the definition of insanity.

Answer: The issue isn’t the scheme as much as it is inability to perform in the scheme. The scheme is a very good one and it’s show to be a very effective one. However it is only effective when the front four defensive line gets consistent pressure on the quarterback. The Colts have carried out the defensive scheme effective when their defensive line has managed to get consistent pressure however you will notice that when the defensive line doesn’t get pressure the defense will look poor. The Colts on Monday night had no pressure on Lamar Jackson and had back up cornerbacks playing starter reps due to injury so the defense will look bad.

FtWayneFan (Stampede Blue Comments): In addition to Smonroe question, if Colts wanted to change up the D do they have the players to change? What change would you make if we change?

Answer: The answer to the Colts defensive issues are more related to the players in the scheme not performing rather than scheme. The scheme could use a few minor tweaks to put players in the best positions to perform but it does all come down to players performing when it is asked of them. The Colts could make drastic changes to the defense such as firing Matt Eberflua and bringing in a new defensive coordinator but the players could underperformed under them too. If the Colts wanted to make household changes on defense they have the players to be scheme flexible considering most teams spend the majority of time on defense in nickel. The Colts do however need pass rushers, they need to invest at the cornerback position and they need more consistent play from their linebackers. If the Colts want to be successful in defense their so called star players need to start performing too.
