After a long departure away from the series, Rick Cosnett, who played Eddie Thawne, will be a mainstay throughout The Flash Season 8.

The Flash and its titular hero have been a welcome mainstay within the Arrowverse since Bartholomew Henry Allen first appeared in Arrow‘s second season. The spin-off series premiered in 2014, and with the pun very much intended, the character hit the ground running. Since Greg Berlanti produces it, the show fits the mold of having a core group of main characters, with the recurring and minor characters being more of a revolving door to make way for different and unique stories.

The Flash Season 8: Rick Cosnett’s and Eddie Thawne’s time on the show

The first character to depart The Flash occurred shockingly in the first season, with Rick Cosnett’s character Eddie Thawne leaving the show. Although he was only around for the initial season, his connection was prominent with the fastest man alive and the forensic scientist. Eddie Thawne fulfilled the typical trope of a police officer in a city with a superhero vigilante running amock who despises the superhero until they eventually come around and see the good that is being done.

However, Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne did not just have a cookie-cutter character relationship with The Flash. He also had a complex relationship with Barry’s secret identity. As a detective in Central City, Thawne partnered with Barry’s adoptive father in Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), along with dating Joe’s daughter and Barry’s best friend and childhood crush in Iris West (Candice Patton). It is safe to say that this love triangle was complicated, but it honestly made for some amazing television and a brilliant start to The Flash television show.

After realizing his bloodline was responsible for birthing The Flash’s archnemesis, Eddie Thawne made the difficult and brave decision to end the family tree with him by taking his own life. While in hindsight, this was a rash decision on the same levels as Steve Rogers flying himself into the ice, the moment was beautifully produced and a tragic end to Rick Cosnett’s character. The Zimbabwean-Australian actor did have some recurring and cameo performances throughout the second and third seasons of The Flash, Eddie Thawne’s sacrifice remained solid and true.

The Flash Season 8: The tease and payoff of Rick Cosnett’s announcement

After a tease on his Instagram yesterday, Rick Cosnett confirmed that he would be returning in the upcoming season of The Flash, saying, “If you hadn’t guessed … I’m in the new season of #TheFlash” This upcoming season is currently in production and at the time of writing next to nothing is known about this original cast member’s return to the show, but it is safe to say this homecoming is a welcome one from fans and audiences.

Cosnett’s role could also be connected to the major five-part event of Armageddon that is kicking off The Flash’s upcoming season 8. Characters from around the Arrowverse have already been confirmed, like Alex Danvers, Ray Palmer, and Mia Queen (albeit they are all alive heading into the crossover). Even though the character of Eddie Thawne fulfilled the showrunner’s purpose eloquently, it will be nice to see an original cast member back on The Flash.
