BRAINTREE, Mass. — An armed man who barricaded himself inside a room at a Braintree group home for hours Friday has been taken into custody. Braintree Police have not identified the suspect.

Police said the incident began at 9:25 a.m. Friday when the man showed a gun inside the group home and threatened to use it, before locking himself inside his room. Braintree Police and a SWAT Team soon surrounded the group home on Holbrook Avenue.

For most of the day, the armed man did not speak to negotiators. But twice the man left his room, carrying his handgun. Both times, police said they fired “less than lethal munitions” at the suspect, and he quickly retreated into his locked room.

He is expected to be held over the weekend and will likely be arraigned on charges related to the standoff Monday morning.

Finally, hours later, the armed man left his room, walked down a flight of stairs, again carrying a weapon, and got into a physical confrontation with police before he was subdued. The armed suspect was transported from the scene to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries received in the struggle with police.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
