Starting Friday, a thematic adventure will be viewable in its first North American museum presentation at the Toledo Museum of Art.
"Stan Douglas: Doppelgänger," a film prompted by science fiction elements, follows the journey of an astronaut named Alice who is suddenly turned around on her outer space mission, then upon returning, simultaneously has two opposite experiences: one reality involves her being welcomed home while the other has her perceived as a hostile threat. Those experiences are projected at the same time onto two translucent screens.
Among debates about citizenship, homelands, oppression of marginal communities and reception of immigrants or refugees, this narrative captures how drastically different approaches to these issues occur concurrently around the world.
"Doppelgänger" will be on display through May 15.
