Shinola has been making some serious waves in the watch space over the last decade. The Detroit-based brand has made a strong name for itself as one of today’s most prolific American watchmakers, oftentimes using its rugged Detroit roots as inspiration for its stylish timepieces. Keeping things close to home, Shinola has formed a new collaboration with Motown neighbor and famed pottery studio, Pewabic Pottery, in the brand’s first-ever collection of watches featuring clay dials, the Shinola x Pewabic Runwell Collection.
For the uninitiated, Pewabic Pottery is a National Historic Landmark based in Detroit whose beautiful, handmade craftsmanship has been admired in museums, buildings, and homes around the world. In particular, Pewabic products are known for their iridescent glazes. Their pottery is a point of pride for the Motor City, so their collaboration with another Detroit standout like Shinola makes their partnership all the more historic. The Shinola Pewabic Runwells not only exist as stylish, well-made watches, but they also embody a piece of Detroit history as their dials’ clay is tumbled through the same mixers and filters that make the material for Pewabic’s iconic pottery. These timepieces sport a Pewabic stoneware dial made of sustainably sourced clay with printed Arabic numeral indices in black or blue. Another new addition to Shinola’s Pewabic Runwells is their tumbled stainless steel 41mm case, which provides a layer of protection that contrasts with the clay dial beautifully. Like all Shinola Runwells, the Pewabic Collection Runwells come with the classic sapphire crystal, pumpkin crown, and premium wooden box.
The Shinola Pewabic Runwells are sold on a Grizzly leather strap in either Black or British Tan. The watches are available now on Shinola’s website for $650.
