MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- The city of Milledgeville will be dedicating a community bridge to the first black woman to serve on the city's council.
Dennette Odum Jackson served three terms on the Milledgeville City Council from 1994-2005.
Jackson's service to others and her community did not with her role of being a council member.
She also served in various roles such as:
- Member of the advisory council of The Georgia War Veterans Home
- President of The American Legion Unit 523 for several terms
- Member of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials
- Chairman of the Oconee Community Service Board
- President of local chapter of AARP #5387
Jackson also became the first African American to serve as president of the sixth district of the State of Georgia American Legion Auxiliary.
She passed on February 16, 2013 at the age of 86.
Included in the ceremony will be an invocation from Deacon Michael Hightower, the Pastor of Green Pasture Baptist Church, remarks from the current NAACP Unit 5169 President, Ms. Cynthia Edwards, State Representative of District 145, Mr. Rick Williams, and others.
The ceremony will take place October 23rd at the Voices of Praise Life Enrichment Center on 601 West Montgomery Street.
