The City of Lubbock rolled out its 'Add 806' campaign this month to give citizens time to get used to the idea of dialing area code 806 for ALL phone calls starting Oct. 25.

Numerous area codes across the U.S., including 806, will be included in mandatory 10-digit dialing for all calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only seven digits will not be completed, according to a city news release.

The change is necessary because the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated the area code 988 as the new area code to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. That area code, and all other area codes nationwide, will be moved to 10-digit rule by July 16, 2022.

In total, residents of seven Texas area codes will be required to dial 10 digits (the area code and the telephone number) for all local calls starting Oct. 25.

According to a news release from the Public Utility Commission of Texas, those with phone numbers in the 915, 254, 361, 409, 806, 830 and 940 area codes will need to dial 10 digits.

Callers will still be able to reach emergency services by dialing 911 after the change is in effect.
