Netflix released Season 3 of You today, and the new episodes included a touching tribute to one of the stars the show lost in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. Mark Blum, who starred as bookshop owner Mr. Ivan Mooney in the first season of the show, passed away on March 25, 2020 of COVID complications. He was 63.

The actor also appeared for a bit in Season 2 of the hit Netflix thriller series, reprising his role for a brief flashback sequence alongside lead Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). In the series, Mr. Mooney dies right beside brutal serial killer Joe, who may or may not be responsible for his death in the series. Season 3 of You has a tribute to Blum in the very first episode. “In loving memory — Mark Blum,” the first title card reads in the credits for Episode 1, “And They Lived Happily Ever After”.

When we feet meet Mr. Mooney in You, it’s usually in the form of flashbacks. Mr. Mooney played a big role in raising Joe, though usually by inflicting physical and mental abuse on the boy. Mr. Mooney introduces the giant glass box that Joe uses to trap his prey in Season 1 of the show. His death is left a bit vague — it’s unclear whether he had a stroke or Joe’s actions caused him to seize up and become paralyzed. Either way, Joe doesn’t offer any assistance in the form of an ambulance or medical attention.

Blum was an actor on-screen, and in Broadway shows, beginning his career in the 1970s and spanning all the way into the 2020s until his passing. He starred in major films like Desperately Seeking SusanLovesick, and Just Between Friends in the 1980s. His big breakthrough, though, came with Crocodile Dundee, in which he played editor Richard Mason.

Along with You, Blum starred in a series of hit TV shows like NYPD BlueCapital News, and Sweet Surrender. In 2020, Blum gave guest performances in shows like Almost FamilyBillions, and Tommy. He also starred in Succession as Bill Lockhart and played Ira Langstrom in Elementary.
