After a year of not having a general manager, the Chicago Cubs hired Carter Hawkins on Friday to step into the role.

The Cubs released the following statement on the hiring.

“I am thrilled to bring Carter into our organization,” said Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer. “He has earned a fantastic reputation as a leader through hard work, open-mindedness, humility and intelligence. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the interview process, and it quickly became clear that we share the same passion for team building. I look forward to partnering with him to build the next great Cubs team.”

Hawkins spent 14 seasons in Cleveland with the Indians including the last five as the assistant general manager.

Jed Hoyer had been the GM but was bumped up to President of Baseball Operations after Theo Epstein's departure. Instead of hiring a GM then, the Cubs kept the spot vacant for a year.

Hawkins will have a big task ahead of him right away as the Cubs traded away their entire core during the MLB Trade Deadline. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javy Baez, all mainstays and key parts of the 2016 World Series team are now all gone.

Tension between Cubs fans and ownership has been growing and one of the only cures will be Hawkins, Hoyer and Co. putting in work this offseason to build another contender in Chicago.
