The Detroit Tigers are projected to sign a big-name free agent this offseason. There is plenty to consider bringing in and plenty the organization should avoid. One of the names that has the Tigers as one of the frontrunners is Carlos Correa.

However, bypassing the Astros, long-time shortstop might not be the worst idea. Some of the other names out there are just as attractive and may not cost as much. While someone like Marcus Semien might bring a short-term fix, his contract would likely still carry a high average annual value for the Detroit Tigers payroll.

This is where the Tigers need to be smart. They should look at targeting shortstop Corey Seager this offseason. Seager has spent the last seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has carved out quite the career for himself.

Over seven seasons, he’s had his fair share of injury troubles, but he has surely put in the work to be one of the game’s better infielders. With the deadline acquisition of Trea Turner by the Dodgers, it seems that they are going to bypass resigning Seager.

The Detroit Tigers should target Corey Seager.

This season, Corey Seager made $13.75 million with the Dodgers. He played in 95 games for the team and slashed .306/.394/.521 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI. He underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2018, came back to play 134 games in 2019 and then 52 of the 60 games in 2020.

Injuries may not have been kind to him, but it seems like he is over the hump and could be an excellent addition to the Tigers infield. He’s been smooth up the middle for the Dodgers and a solid core piece that they used to build with as they compiled the star-studded roster they have.

If the Tigers wanted to spend big money but also save a little compared to what Correa might cost, someone like Seager is worth a look. It seems like there’s a lot of value in a five-year deal here. More than Semien in terms with similar money figures and likely less than Correa would make in some gargantuan contract.

If the Tigers do choose to go with Seager, they certainly are not going to make a mistake. He’s a solid veteran who could be a very impactful player for the Tigers organization. If they want a long-term solution, Seager is surely someone to consider.

However, the Tigers have a few routes they can go and could consider adding a stopgap type shortstop as well. Time will tell, but if they want to spend big money, Seager is someone they need to consider.
