Burn it down. The case: It’s only been six games, but it’s already clear the Sirianni-Hurts marriage is going to be short-lived. If Hurts isn’t good enough as a passer to give the team an accurate read on Sirianni’s offense and if Sirianni’s offense isn’t tailored enough to Hurts’ skill set to allow for an accurate assessment of him as the quarterback of the future, the Eagles risk having no answers by the end of the season. Even if they could somehow sneak into the playoffs, it’s not like they’d be anything more than cannon fodder. And who are we kidding? This whole thing is about tearing things down for a rebuild that can start in earnest next offseason with three possible first-round picks and most likely four picks in the top 50. Anyone who’s not in the team’s long-term plans should be available. Goedert? Is the team really going to give him a high-priced extension when he’s never really been a No. 1 tight end? If someone’s willing to pay a premium, say a third-round pick, go for it. How about Miles Sanders? He’s barely used in the offense to begin with, and there’s no way the team is going to sign him to a second contract. Let him go, too. And if trading away some of these players makes the team worse in the short run, all the better for draft-pick purposes. Sirianni’s best attribute as a coach seems to be his ability to get the team to play hard, so there should be no concerns about the locker room checking out even in a firesale. It’s a dirty business, but one the Eagles have to be willing to play.

1. This is two games in a row now that Jalen Hurts was largely ineffective throwing the football, and again the blame lies equally with Nick Sirianni’s aimless play calling and Hurts’ own struggles. Sirianni just doesn’t have the ability right now to consistently call plays that give Hurts a chance to get into a rhythm, and Hurts for the second straight week missed too many open guys. This is the worst pass defense in the NFL – allowing 314 yards per game – and Hurts just wasn’t able to take advantage. He was 12-for-26 for 115 yards, one TD, one INT and a 55.8 passer rating. Yes, he can make some incredible plays with his legs, and his running and scrambling late in games has gotten the Eagles back into two games they trailed by double digits. But until he evolves as a passer it’s going to be very difficult for the Eagles to win many games. He’s not seeing the field, he’s not making smart decisions under pressure, and he’s just flat-out missing open guys. Other than a 25-yarder to DeVonta Smith, a 24-yarder to Quez Watkins and a 16-yarder to Zach Ertz, he didn’t have a completion longer than six yards Thursday. He has to be better.

The Philadelphia Eagles are 2-4 after losing at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. Final score: 28 to 22. For the second week in a row, the Eagles got off to an incredibly slow start. The Birds had just 99 yards of offense entering the fourth quarter. The defense too often made things look entirely too easy for Tom Brady and company. To their credit, the Eagles didn’t pack it in and fold. They did find a way to make it competitive at the end by cutting the lead to six points in the fourth quarter. But the Bucs closed it out and never gave Philly a chance to get the go-ahead score to complete the comeback.

1) The ‘Stock Down’ Award: Jalen Hurts. Hurts battled in this game, but he simply missed way too many makeable throws. Off the top of my head: He missed an easy throw, well short, on a comeback route to Jalen Reagor. He badly missed Zach Ertz on a corner route to the turkey hole. He threw way off-target to DeVonta Smith, who had to turn into a defensive back and swat the ball away to prevent an INT. He had Quez Watkins streaking down the field with a step on his man, but he threw short and too far inside, once again forcing his receiver to turn into a defensive back, except on that occasion it was an INT. On the night, Hurts was 12 of 26 for 115 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The game plan wasn’t good and Hurts was chased around all night by Bucs pass rushers, so this game wasn’t all on him, but he wasn’t good. This was a step in the wrong direction for his season-long “tryout” to be the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2022 and beyond.

After a brutal six-game stretch to open the season, the Eagles sit at 2-4. They have two wins, two close losses and two blowout losses. They now have 10 days to rest and make some schematic evaluations. The next two games are winnable. If the Eagles could get to 4-4, that would make the final nine games pretty interesting. If the Eagles don’t clean some things up and start playing smarter, they could lose the next two and see the season get away from them. This team is tough. They battle. They compete. But they must play smarter and start making plays if they want to win some games and show us something. There are no moral victories in the NFL. Go make some plays. Go win some games. And maybe mix in a few more runs.

Zach Ertz scored the Eagles’ only passing touchdown on the night, and he was one of only three receivers or tight ends to touch the ball in the passing game. The offense gained just one first down in its next six possessions after that opening touchdown drive and didn’t again reach Tampa Bay territory until late in the third quarter. The defense forced a couple of punts and had an interception, but Tampa Bay also put together four long touchdown drives and mixed the run and pass beautifully, keeping the Eagles on their heels as the Bucs nearly tripled the Eagles’ time of possession on the way to a 28-7 advantage. “Tonight, man, we just can’t flatline,” wide receiver Quez Watkins said. “We need to keep going, keep the offense moving, keep getting first downs and keep the chains moving. Tonight, we just flatlined in the second quarter after that first possession. We came in and scored on the first drive and had everything going. We’ve got to keep pushing as a team.”

6.) Have a night, Shaq. Shaquil Barrett was an absolute beast. He kept pressure on Jalen Hurts all night long, forcing rushed throws, incompletions, and taking Hurts down on scrambles for minimal gains. He was inches away from multiple sacks and was an absolute wrecking ball for the Bucs defense. Need much, much more of that moving forward.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be making a stunningly quick recovery from the concussion he suffered Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, and reports from East Rutherford are that it seems more likely than not that Jones will be cleared to play this Sunday against the Loa Angeles Rams. Jones took first-team reps during the open portion of Thursday’s practice, a positive sign in his recovery. Head coach Joe Judge sounded optimistic he would have his starting quarterback in the lineup on Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys are a few days away from being on their bye for the season which will be a welcome opportunity for reinforcements to prepare to return and for players who have been playing to rest up. As we all know an NFL season is a battle of attrition and injuries pop up all the time around the league. Dallas has been dealing with a handful of players being unavailable to them (to put it mildly), but on Thursday some of our deepest wounds were picked at when left tackle Tyron Smith appeared on the injury report as a limited participant with a neck issue. Tyron’s history with his neck is well-chronicled which is why this is a not so fun discussion for many Cowboys fans. Plenty of people began speculating what this week could look like if Tyron is unable to play, but it appears that this may not even be the case. According to ESPN the “current expectation” is that Tyron Smith will play on Sunday.

Travis Kelce vs. Jamin Davis. Rookie linebacker Jamin Davis played just 13 snaps last week against the Saints. However, the coaches claim that the small number of snaps is primarily due to the “game-plan” and “trying to win,” which is understandable on the surface. So from a coaching perspective, if Jamin Davis is viewed as one of the better coverage linebackers, he’ll have an opportunity to go up against one of the better tight ends in the NFL, both in-line and as a slot option. Personally, this matchup may best be served with safety Kam Curl who is more reliable than anyone else covering in the box. Davis, or Curl for that matter, won’t be shutting down one of the league’s best tight ends, but can he limit him all? We’ll see.

Fortunately, the 1-4 Colts still have some time to make a full determination on Wentz—because if their season continues to snowball (and the playoffs eventually fall out of reach), they have until Week 13 to ultimately shut down the newly acquired quarterback (to preserve their top 2022 first round pick). [Philadelphia obtains Indianapolis’ 2022 first round pick (which would be an early one in this scenario) if Wentz plays at least 75% of the Colts’ total offensive snaps.] Even then, they’re still committed to him significantly salary-cap wise for at least the 2022 campaign, so it’s not as though it would be ‘one and done’ with Wentz regardless. Right now, it’s okay to say ‘I don’t know yet’, because the Colts still have time to figure it out. That being said, at this juncture, Wentz appears to be ascending in Indianapolis and arguably hasn’t even played his best football consistently yet.

This team stinks, and they’re going to continue to stink even with the return of starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. I’m sorry to break it to you, but Tua isn’t a shutdown cornerback (remember when we had one of those?) or a linebacker who can excel in coverage (have we ever had one of those?) or even just an offensive tackle who can stand his ground for more than 0.3 seconds (we miss you Brandon Albert). This team needs a lot more than quality quarterback play to measure up to the standards that were set before the season started.
