Leigh Whannell’s 2018 Blumhouse sci-fi thriller Upgrade was an awesome film! Unfortunately, it didn’t do very well at the box office. The movie didn’t get a very big release so not a lot of people had the opportunity to see it on the big screen and producer Jason Blum is not happy about that.

About a year ago, it was announced that the film was going to be adapted as a TV series, which is something I am actually looking forward to. The series is being co-created and executive produced by Whannell and Tim Walsh (Treadstone) who will also serve as showrunner.

Blum has now offered a first update on the film since it was announced, and as of right now, they are trying to get the scripts ready so they can get the series order they are after. He told Collider:

"Upgrade should have been a wide release. I was pissed about that. We're working on a TV show. So working on the scripts. This first round didn't come out. I didn't get the response I wanted to get. I don't want to be in development. I want an order. We're working on the scripts again, so that we can get an order. And I don't want to develop it."

The story for the film follows Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green), who is paralyzed after a brutal mugging and his wife was killed. A billionaire inventor offers Trace a cure, an artificial intelligence implant called STEM that will enhance his body. Now able to walk, Grey finds that he also has superhuman strength and agility, skills he uses to seek revenge against the thugs who destroyed his life.

The Upgrade series is supposed to pick up “a few years after the events of the film and broadens the universe with an evolved version of STEM and a new host – imagining a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity.”

I just hope that they can bring that same awesomeness of the film to the series. Blum and his creative team are definitely up for the challenge of making it happen!
