A good day for Bruins fans!

The rumblings of “we’re getting there” earlier in the week have turned into actual news: the Bruins have signed defenseman Charlie McAvoy to a contract extension!

For those who don’t want to do the math, that comes out to $76 million over the life of the contract — I’m pretty sure this is the single largest contract in Bruins history.

It’s hard to say that it isn’t deserved for McAvoy, who’s among the players most crucial to the Bruins success.

Why? Because he’s very good.

For the sake of comparison, McAvoy’s new AAV will be slightly more than Cale Makar’s $9 million AAV and the same as Seth Jones’ $9.5 AAV.

If you’re a Bruins fan, it’s hard not to be happy with this deal. The contract will take McAvoy into his early 30s, covering the majority of his prime years as an NHL defenseman.

Even if he stagnates and remains as effective offensively and defensively as he is now, this is a good deal; if he continues to grow (particularly his offensive game), this will look like a steal in a few years.
