FRAMINGHAM – Firefighters extinguished a 2-alarm fire in a 6-story apartment building located at the corner of Route 9 and Main Street in Framingham this morning, October 15.

The call came in around 9 a.m. at 640 Worcester Road for a fire at the Granada Apartments, said Framingham Fire Chief Michael Dutcher.

Firefighters have extinguished the fire but are still on the scene still at 1 p.m.

Main Street was closed between Route 9 and Walnut Street but re-opened after 3 p.m., said Framingham Police.

Firefighters when they arrived on the scene had to help with the evacuation of the apartment building, said Chief Dutcher.

“We had to direct people to proper stairways,” he added.

Firefighters rescued a dog over a balcony, said Chief Dutcher.

As a second alarm was called, all Framingham Fire companies responded to the fire, said Chief Dutcher.

One firefighters suffered a minor knee injury, said Chief Dutcher.

There were no civilian injuries.

The fire began in a fire floor unit, said Chief Dutcher.

“Companies first on scene saw heavy fire coming from the first floor balcony,” said Chief Dutcher.

The first is still under investigation, said the Chief.

“We are hopeful that the majority of the building’s occupants can be back in their apartments,” said Chief Dutcher. “Two or three units are likely to be inhabitable.”

Chief Dutcher said the Red Cross is already on scene helping residents.

“Great work and great stop by the first unit on scene. The shift commander Deputy Chief O’Rouke called for the second alarm immediately once on scene due to the multi-unit occupancy. This type of fire requires a lot of staffing to limit the damage. The firefighters did a great job today.”
