AUSTIN, Texas — City leaders are moving forward with a plan to build an affordable housing complex in South Austin.
On Thursday, the Austin City Council voted unanimously to give the first greenlight to a development planned for an area off of Brandt Road, just east of Interstate 35 near Onion Creek. The proposed development will still need to go through two more readings to be finally approved.
According to a report from Community Impact, some neighbors in the area are concerned about road safety. Councilmember Ann Kitchen (District 5) affirmed those concerns Thursday, noting that Brandt Road is considered substandard and saying that the council needs to make sure there are sidewalks in the area.
Kitchen said the council is working with the Public Works Department on the timeline and cost for a sidewalk or shared-use path that would go from the proposed development to Slaughter Lane.
Community Impact reports that neighbors in the area are also worried about the location's closeness to the floodplain, but Kitchen said it would be against City regulations for developers to build on the floodplain. She said developers will also have to plan the site so that it doesn't introduce more runoff downstream.
