At Long Last, McDonald's Is Testing This Burger In the U.S. Next Month

However, the American version will not be vegan.

After conducting tests of its newest burger in several European countries this year, McDonald's is finally bringing it to the domestic market. The McPlant will soon begin testing in select restaurants across the U.S. and it will be the first time it is sold domestically.

For those who don't remember, the chain announced its first-ever plant-based burger late last year and revealed it had signed a three-year global agreement with Beyond Meat. The food company is partnering with the chain on the protein for a whole plant-based line, which could, down the line, include chicken and breakfast sandwiches, too.

To start with, the McPlant will only be tested at eight restaurants, including in Irving and Carrollton, Texas, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jennings and Lake Charles, La., and El Segundo and Manhattan Beach in California, according to a press release. It will begin on November 3.

American customers will finally get a first taste of the new burger, but for McDonald's, it's more about operability. "This particular test will help us understand how offering a burger with a plant-based patty impacts the kitchens in our restaurants," the company said.

Those who have already tried the McPlant in other countries have compared it to the traditional Big Mac experience at McDonald's, while some have characterized it as "enjoyable" but "mushy."

However, there will be one major difference between the McPlant tested in some of Europe and the one soon hitting our shores. While the burger served in the U.K. was vegan, complete with vegan cheese and sauce, the American version will not be, and will feature regular cheese and mayo.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article stated that the vegan version of the McPlant was tested in Sweden, Denmark, and the U.K. However, only the U.K. version was vegan.
