The term “wild card” was used this week by a major league talent evaluator as he considered Jacob deGrom’s future with the Mets.

The evaluator drew upon the name Clayton Kershaw and wondered whether deGrom could be entering a phase of his career that mirrors what the future Hall of Fame Dodgers left-hander has endured in recent seasons.

Kershaw, 33, remains a force, but hasn’t reached 30 starts since 2015 largely because of various physical ailments. This season, Kershaw started 22 games for the Dodgers before he was shut down with forearm and elbow discomfort that won’t require Tommy John surgery.
