Have you ever wanted to see Robert Altman direct Martin Scorsese and Steve Buscemi before filming a long take? Well, you’re in for a treat.

John Frankensteiner posted a short clip on his Twitter of Altman, Scorsese, and Buscemi all gathered around a table in 2004 rehearsing a scene for the four-part miniseries Tanner on Tanner

Some of you might recognize this video because it was uploaded to YouTube a while back, but has been deleted for unknown reasons. Thankfully, John Frankensteiner has reuploaded the video online for all of us to watch:

Tanner on Tanner is a sequel to Altman’s Tanner ‘88, a mockumentary miniseries about a failed presidential candidate. Tanner on Tanner catches up with the failed presidential candidate 16 years later, but through his aspiring documentarian daughter’s perspective.

The 2004 miniseries is littered with big names like Robert Redford, Barack Obama, Steve Buscemi, Michael Moore, and Martin Scorsese.

The scene featuring Altman directing Scorsese, Buscemi, and Cynthia Nixon seems to be a behind-the-scenes look at the first episode of the miniseries. Nixon’s character is trying to convince Scorsese to come to watch her documentary on her father. While Scorsese and Nixon are having their conversation, Altman jumps in to alter their interactions, telling them how or what they should say to convey the feeling of polite rejection that we have all faced.

The clip is very short, but it is still a moment we can learn from. Working with multiple creatives can create an atmosphere that is potent with the desire to make a great product, and bouncing off of one another can lead to a result that hones in the exact emotion of a scene that you were looking for.
