(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Melissa Lee worked at Riley Drug in Geneva for 13 years, but the family-owned business ended a 55-year-run in January.

So, Lee decided to pick up where they left off.

“I just thought it'd be nice to bring it back to those people who are so used to the personalized pharmacy atmosphere,” she said.

Now, she’s opening Geneva Pharmacy. The independent drug store, located at the corner of Woodlawn and East State Streets, will be open six days a week starting Monday Oct. 18.

Lee tells WBBM Newsradio it’s easy for independent store owners to really get to know their customers.

“I've worked for Big Pharma before and, you know, it definitely has its place,” Lee said. “But they're very busy places, and it's just easier for us to be able to develop those relationships with customers.”

Already, Lee said she has received an outpouring of support from those in the western suburbs.

“A lot of people are saying the community needs an independent pharmacy just because the town itself has a lot of privately owned businesses, and it just kind of fits in into the mold here.”

As part of its personalized touch, Geneva Pharmacy will offer free prescription deliveries to those within a 25-mile radius.

The store will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
