Fox News host Sean Hannity wished former President Bill Clinton well on Thursday after he was hospitalized with sepsis, but he then attacked liberals in the same speech.
Clinton was admitted to the University of California Irvine Medical Center's intensive care unit on Tuesday for a urinary tract infection that spread to his bloodstream, a condition known as sepsis. His doctors said that he has been responding well to antibiotics and that his condition is improving.
Hannity brought on Fox News medical contributor Dr Marty Makary on the channel on Thursday to discuss the breaking news about Clinton. The right-wing host started by saying: "We wish the president well, we obviously have political differences."
"But unlike liberals, I actually care about human life," he said straight after.
In a separate speech on Fox yesterday, Hannity said: "We do wish the former president well, unlike liberals that just hate all conservatives. They get sick, they [sic] don't care."
Hannity has in the past criticized Clinton on subjects including corruption claims and sexual abuse allegations.
His doctors said on Thursday that Clinton was in good spirits, talking to family and staff, and that he has been up and walking. He is remaining at the hospital for tests, they said.
"After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well," the doctors said. "We hope to have him go home soon."
Clinton's office said the former president was in California for a private event for his foundation, but he had been feeling tired on Tuesday and was admitted to hospital after some tests.
His doctors said Clinton will be given intravenous antibiotics until Friday, when he will likely be switched to oral antibiotics.
The former president has a history of health issues. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 when he was 58 after he complained of chest pains and shortness of breath for several months. At the time, he mistakenly said it was due to acid and a lack of exercise, but doctors found that he had severe heart disease and blocked arteries, The New York Times reported.
Surgeons had to remove two arteries from Clinton's chest and a vein in his leg and then re-attach them to his heart in order to get the blood flowing around the blocked arteries, the newspaper reported. Clinton left hospital four days after the procedure.
Clinton was also hospitalized in 2010 for routine stent surgery. In the procedure, doctors implanted two small metal mesh stents into a coronary artery to aid blood flow.
