Xabi Alonso On The Liverpool Job, Jurgen Klopp And Football Management
Ex Liverpool player and Anfield legend Xabi Alonso has been speaking about how he feels about Liverpool fans, whether he would take the manager's job and also about Jurgen Klopp.
The retired Spanish midfielder who is now coaching Real Sociedad's B Team was part of the famous 2005 Champions League winning team on a remarkable night in Istanbul when Liverpool beat AC Milan.
After leaving Liverpool, Alonso went on to enjoy even more success with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and the Spanish national team but has now turned his focus to football management.
Alonso on Liverpool Fans
A player cherished by Liverpool fans for his composure and incredible passing told CNN that he still holds the club and the fans in his heart.
"I am here in San Sebastian and Liverpool fans, they salute me and I still feel that support.”
Alonso On Klopp And Taking The Liverpool Job
The scorer of the equalising goal on that incredible night in Istanbul was also complimentary about Liverpool's German manager Klopp but did not rule out being interested in his job in the future.
"For me, that feeling in life is great. Right now, Jurgen is doing a great job, so I think that the job is fulfilled, but for sure that Liverpool is top, top club for me, very, very, special."
Alonso In Transitioning From Player To Manager
It is common knowledge in football that Alonso was a very intelligent player with a great tactical understanding, and respected by colleagues and opponents.
He gave some more insight into how the transition from player to manager seemed natural to him.
"Sometimes the manager, he doesn't have time to give an instruction on the pitch,”
"So you need players to be able to take those decisions when you are playing so quick. And that was my job, and that's why it became natural to me, to me, that process to try to be a manager."
It's easy to imagine that Alonso could very well be a success as a football manager. His intelligence and tactical understanding of the game will give him a big advantage over others.
Whilst these are key aspects of the job, there are also many other facets of the profession he would need to master.
One thing that is certain however, is if he did ever return to Anfield in some capacity it would be well received by the fans.
