Claudia Eller offered an intimate conversation with actress Beanie Feldstein, who will take on the legendary role of Fanny Brice in Broadway’s revival of “Funny Girl”. The role made famous by Barbra Streisand marks Feldstein’s long-awaited return to Broadway since her recent run with Bette Midler in “Hello Dolly.”
The conversation, part of Variety Legit!: The Return to Broadway, in partnership with City National Banks, touched upon her love of Broadway from a very young age. Feldstein went on to talk about how transformative her high school production of “Into the Woods” with her best friend Ben Platt was to who she was as a person. “It hit me deep in the soul,” and allowed her to touch an emotion that she couldn’t capture anywhere else.
That feeling resurfaced when Jerry Zaks directed her in “Hello Dolly” where she said, “It was electric. It almost felt like being at a Broadway rock concert.”
She spoke about how much she learned from Zaks and the rest of the cast, “It was an incredible gift for me as a young actor to learn from people that are deeply experienced.” With actors such as David Hyde Pierce, Kate Baldwin and show star Midler, Feldstein learned the most important lesson was to never stop working.
Turning to the future, Feldstein revealed how nervous she is for the opening of “Funny Girl” (coming to Broadway in Spring of 2022) but also that she had worked her whole life for Broadway. Her roles in movies were part of her growth, but Broadway is her home and that’s why she always gets nervous when she performs.
While Feldstein was filming “Impeachment, American Crime Story,” playing the role of Monica Lewinsky during the week, she spent the weekends rehearsing for “Funny Girl” over zoom. In-person rehearsals start in February.
