New Italian eatery to open in Old City Hall in Davis

FAMILY OWNS ZIA’S DELI IN DAVIS HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 26 YEARS. IT’S 10,:3 BUT IN ALL TTHA TIME NOTHING HAS BEEN MORE CHALLENGING THAN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF DINURG THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND A CHALLENGE. THATAS W A CHALLENGE OWNERS KEVIN AND ANNE-MARIE CRILLEY SAY AT THE BEGINNING BUSINESS WENT DOWN BY AT LEAST HALF NOW. THEY’RE NOWREHE NEAR NORMAL, BUT THINGS ARE LOOKING UP STUDENTS ARE BACK ON CAMPUS ATC U DAVIS AND THEY FINALLY HAVE A FULL STAFF. THEY CONSIDER THEMSELVES LUCKY KNOWING SOME OF THEIR NEIGHBORS DID NOT MAKE IT LIKE DEVERE’S CLOSE, WHICH IS REALLY S.AD THAT WAS A WONDERFUL ESTABLISHMENT. THEY WERE GREAT BISTRO DIDN’T REAL OPEN. THEY’RE GONE BISTRO 33 AT THE HIST. CITY HALL SITE CLOSED LAST YEAR, BUTHE T OLD BUILDING IS GETTING NEW LIFE. WE’RE NOT TRYING TO BRING JUST ANOTHER ITALIAN RESTAURANT. WE’RE REALLY FOCUSED ON MAKING IT AFFORDABLEOR F EVERYBODY MICHAEL GALLION AND ARE NO DRUVILAY ARE CO-OWNERSF O WHAT WILL SOON BE MAMA. JUNE THEY PLAN TO SERVE PZAIZ PASTA AND SALADS HERE GALLIAN LIVES IN NAPA, BUT SAYS THIS ISP MY HOMETNOW IS DAVIS I GREW UP THERE. I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL THERE AND 89 MY WEIF WENT TO COLLEGE THERE DESPITE THE CHALLENGES BUSINESS OWNERS HERE HAVE FACED. THEY’RE HOPEFUL FOR THE FUTURE. WE’RE HOPING RIGHT? I MEAN DAVID’S ALWAYS BOUNCES BACK. IT’S A GREAT LITTLE TOWN IT REALLY IS. THE NEW OWNERS SAY THEY PLAN TO HAVE A CAFE HERE THAT WILL OPEN EARLY AS EARLY AS 7:00 AND THEN OFFER QUALITY GRAB-AND-GO FOOD AS LAT ASE ONE IN

New Italian eatery to open in Old City Hall in Davis
At a time when many businesses are just focused on surviving, a new one is set to open in a well-known, historic location.Plans are in the works for a new Italian eatery called Mamma at the Old City Hall building in Davis. It used to be the site of Bistro 33, but it closed during the COVID-19 pandemic last year."We're not just trying to open another Italian restaurant. We're really focused on making it affordable for everybody," Michael Galyen said.Galyen and Arnaud Drouvillé are co-owners of the new business. They both live in Napa and have experience working together in the restaurant industry."He said, 'Can you imagine a restaurant that does classic Neopolitan pizzas at $8, $9?' I said, 'Man, if you could do that, you'd have a line down the block,'" Galyen said, describing the conversation with Drouvillé that started it all. Drouvillé is a chef, so he started making pizzas and pastas. Then, the concept came closer to becoming a reality when Galyen realized the Old City Hall building was available."When I took him there, his jaw literally hit the floor just the patio alone," Galyen said of his visit to the location with Drouvillé.Galyen said this is a chance for him to come home."My hometown is Davis. I grew up there. I graduated high school there in '89. My wife went to college there," he explained.They said their lease requires them to open by July 1, but they are aiming to open earlier in June.
