PORTLAND (WGME) -- Developers have broken ground on what's expected to be the state's tallest building.
Construction of the building, known for now as 201 Federal Street, kicked off Thursday.
At 190 feet tall, the 18-story building will be the tallest in the state and help meet the needs of Portland's housing shortage.
The building will have 263 much-needed apartments.
“Substantial housing is such an asset to the folks that are moving here and the growth we are seeing in our economy, and it's also great for seniors looking to downsize,” Portland Mayor Kate Snyder said.
The building will cost $64 million and create hundreds of jobs.
