GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The archery and crossbow deer season is well underway.
The DNR’s Jeff Pritzl says numbers are about where they expected them to be. Around 20,000 deer have already been taken since the start of the season on September 18th.
“They’re right about on pace with where they’ve been the past few years,” Pritzl told Fox 11’s ‘Good Day Wisconsin’. “Archery and Crossbow harvest is remarkably consistent from year to year.”
Of the 20,000 harvested so far this season, 5,000 came during the youth deer hunt on Oct. 9 and 10.
The warmth is keeping some hunters away.
“When it’s as warm as it is, it creates a little more of a challenge in taking care of that deer once you’ve got it,” said Pritzl. “Because of the warmer temperatures.”
The archery season runs until January 22nd. The gun deer season opens up November 20th.
