Field Hockey Travels to Longwood before Hosting La Salle

BOONE, N.C. - App State field hockey looks to build off of its recent MAC win with matchups against Longwood and La Salle this weekend. The Mountaineers travel to Farmville, Va. Friday to face the Lancers at 5 p.m. before traveling home for a non-conference game against the Explorers Sunday at noon.

Friday's game can be streamed on ESPN+ and Sunday's matchup can be streamed on Twitch.

About the Mountaineers
App State has started the season 5-5 overall and 2-2 in MAC games. This year, the top four teams in the MAC will compete in the conference tournament on Nov. 5 and 6, and the Mountaineers currently sit at No. 4 in the rankings.

The Black & Gold have had several impressive wins so far, including its first ranked win in program history against No. 24 James Madison in a 2-0 shutout, a 2-1 MAC win against Ohio, and another 4-2 MAC victory over Bellarmine last time out. Against the Knights, senior midfielder Friederike Stegen became the all-time assists leader for App State with 23 after assisting Pauline Mangold on a corner play in the second minute of the game.

Sarah Farrell leads the team in goals with four, followed by Mangold and Charlotte Bosma who each have three. Mangold is second in goals and assists, with four assists following Stegen's five.

Bosma, Sterre Molkenboer and Jillian Orcutt have been the standout freshmen for the Mountaineers so far this season. Along with her three goals, Bosma has a shot on goal percentage of 77%. Molkenboer has two goals and two assists, including the game winning shot against Towson. Orcutt has started every game on defense and has tallied up 538 total minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Addie Clark leads the MAC in save percentage at 75.3%. She is also second in fewest goals allowed in the conference with just 1.8 per game.

Scouting Longwood (7-4, 2-2 MAC)
The Lancers have had two big MAC shutouts this season, beating Central Michigan 7-0 and Bellarmine 6-0. Their two MAC losses came against Miami and No. 24 Kent State.

Senior Luna Lopez is the player to watch with six goals and four assists in the fall of 2021. Lopez has been named to the All-MAC first team in all three of her seasons going into this year.

In the cage for Longwood, Madison Nuckols leads the MAC in fewest average goals with 1.4 per game. Nuckols also ranks first in the MAC in shutouts with five. However, App State is second in the MAC in shots on goal per game with 8.9.

Scouting La Salle (5-7, 2-2 A-10)
The Explorers have only won at home so far this season, and are 0-6 on the road. App State is leading the historical series 3-2, winning its last match up 1-0 in Sep. 2019.

On offense, La Salle has two main goal scorers: Sofia Pla (8) and Tatum Johnson (7). No one else on the team has more than two goals this season.

Up Next
After this weekend, the Mountaineers will host No. 24 Kent State on Oct. 22 for their last home game of the season. After that, they will travel to Central Michigan for back-to-back games against the Chippewas in hopes of finalizing a spot in the MAC tournament.
