Rachel Weisz to Star in Upcoming Adaptation of Seance on a Wet Afternoon

Rachel Weisz will star and produce the upcoming adaptation of the acclaimed suspense novel Seance on a Wet Afternoon, according to a report from Deadline.

Weisz joins the project alongside Tomas Alfredson, who has been attached to direct after Harry Bradbeer stepped away from the film to direct the sequel to Enola Holmes, but will remain as an executive producer.

Seance on a Wet Afternoon is based on a 1961 novel by the same name written by Mark McShane and tells the story of a mentally unstable self-proclaimed psychic medium, who convinces her husband to kidnap a child so that she can then help the police solve the case, thereby boosting her own credibility in the process.

This isn’t the first time that the novel has been adapted, with the story having been turned into a film in 1964 starring Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley.

The upcoming film will be written by Jack Thorne, from a story by himself and Harry Bradbeer. Weisz will likely be hoping for another big role to continue her recent success of Oscar-nominated films, with her last film — 2018’s The Favourite — earning her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
