TROY, Ala. – One of the best players in Troy and Sun Belt Conference history, Fatima Fernandez Cano, is heading to the LPGA Tour after finishing second on the Symetra Tour Race for the Card money list. Cano becomes the first former Troy player to earn her LPGA Tour Card.

"My goal at the beginning of the year was to be in the top 10 on the Symetra Tour," Cano told SymetraTour.com. "Even though I was a 2020 graduate, I knew we would not have the same LPGA status as previous classes because of COVID freezing the priority list. So, I put my focus and determination into my play out here. This is even sweeter than last year. My dreams are much more real now. I can't wait to compete full time on the LPGA Tour and leave my mark."

A four-time first team All-Sun Belt selection while at Troy, Cano led the Symetra Tour with 238 birdies and was second in par-3 scoring (2.948), second in par-5 scoring (4.607) and third in overall scoring average (70.41).

It was Cano's second straight year finishing as a Symetra Tour graduate, however; COVID-19 affected the number of players selected to receive their LPGA Card. She finished the 2021 season with three runner-up cards and 10 top-10 finishes in 20 total events.

"I'm proud of it, honestly; it took so much work. This goes back to high school and practicing in the rain in the cold. To having bought a motorcycle, so I didn't have to get my mom from work to drive me to the driving range," Cano told SymetraTour.com. "It goes back to college, working nonstop because I loved it honestly. It goes back to when I finished college, and I was broke as I could be and had to caddying for a little bit and save my money. I am really just proud of it all."

Cano, who won the Sun Belt individual championship as a freshman, played in an NCAA Regional all four of her seasons with the Trojans, three on Sun Belt champion squads and another as an at-large selection. She is second on Troy's career stroke average list (73.89) and is responsible for three of the four lowest single-season stroke averages in school history.
