The St. Louis Cardinals dropped a bombshell on Thursday by firing manager Mike Shildt, who had one year remaining on his current deal. The club said it boiled down to “philosophical differences”. Take it for what you will, but by no surprise, Cardinals fans will be wondering, could a reunion be in store with Tony La Russa? According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, he'll be staying with the White Sox.

La Russa enjoyed a successful spell with the Cardinals from 1996-2011. They won the World Series in 2006 and 2011 under La Russa while winning the NL Central six times. The legendary coach made a name for the franchise. However, he is evidently happy with Chicago right now. La Russa led the White Sox to a 93-69 record en route to the AL Central title but Chi-Town's inexperience in the postseason showed in the ALDS, with Houston beating them in four games.

While he isn't under contract in 2022, the White Sox players have applauded how much they loved having La Russa as their manager. That being said, the Cardinals will need to look elsewhere because all signs point to Chicago handing the 77-year-old a new deal. After such a successful spell, it only makes sense for the team to do so.
