CRAB ORCHARD, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – Every child should be able to enjoy Halloween, and New Life Tabernacle in Crab Orchard is working to make sure that happens this spooky season.
The church is planning to host a “Just My Type 1” Trunk-or-Treat for children with Type 1 Diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes.
Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes must control their sugar intake and work to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Because of this, children with Type 1 Diabetes cannot eat the amount of candy that their non-diabetic peers can eat.
All treats passed out during the event will be diabetic approved and feature low carb and low sugar options to ensure a safe Halloween for everyone.
Organizer of the event, Traci Tucker Davis says this issue of providing safe foods hits close to home as the church has two children in its congregation with Type 1 Diabetes.
Davis believes Halloween, and other holidays, should be family-focused. Children and their parents shouldn’t have to worry about what treats they are consuming.
“We just want to make it a normal activity for them,” she said. “Holidays are so focused on sweets and kids just getting to have that bag full of treats and I know this gives them something that they can feel like they’re just kids.”
According to Davis, all of the treats have been approved by the parents. The bags will also include treats as low-carb, low-sugar options are limited.
The event will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 1297 Robert C Byrd Drive. Treats will be passed out until 8 p.m.
