Tuscaloosa Academy's application to join the Alabama High School Athletic Association as a full-member in the 2022-23 school year was approved by the AHSAA Central Board of Control Thursday during a meeting at the AHSAA Office in Montgomery.

Now it's up to the private school's board of trustees to vote on joining next Wednesday. Tuscaloosa Academy's headmaster, Alan Barr, and board of trustees head were at the AHSAA's meeting.

If approved by at least eight of 14 members, Tuscaloosa Academy will leave the Alabama Independent School Association, where it competes in the largest classification. Tuscaloosa Academy would be a Class 1A or 2A program in the AHSAA.

"We've been in the AISA for a long time and the school is growing, expanding in a lot of different areas," Barr said. "We were looking at our athletics. The board has to decide if the time is right to take this new direction and what that means for the school. We think it's all very positive. A lot of opportunity."
