Riftbreaker

The Riftbreaker is out today, the latest base-building RPG from EXOR Studios. With a detailed sci-fi world and plenty of customization options, it’s a game that’ll keep you busy for hundreds of hours. With mechanics as deep as these, many players are wondering whether they can tackle The Riftbreaker with friends in tow. Fear not, as we break down whether the game has co-op functionality, so you know whether you can decimate enemy bases and conquer the futuristic world together.

Is There Co-Op in The Riftbreaker?

Sadly, there is no co-op functionality in The Riftbreaker. It’s a single-player RPG at heart, and as such you aren’t able to team up with friends to play.

That's according to the game's own Steam page. It confirms that The Riftbreaker is single-player - and while there is no mention of Co-Op, the developers have confirmed that it's coming in late 2022:

The last but one of the most important new additions that we're working on is of course - online multiplayer. This is an ongoing task that is being worked on in parallel to all of the other updates. Behind the scenes, we are slowly reworking large parts of code to make surviving on Galatea 37 together with your friends possible. Some of these changes include large optimizations to how we handle data and game logic. This requires big parts of the game's code to be redesigned and rewritten. We don't have a precise estimate for when this task will be completed, but we're aiming for the end of 2022, with early beta tests coming sometime sooner.

Yes, while there isn't co-op in The Riftbreaker quite yet, it will be a mechanic added in future updates.

As such, EXOR Studios promises a co-op update to come further down the line. The good news is that it'll be a free addition, so you won't have to purchase any downloadable content to play The Riftbreaker with friends. As such, there will be co-op in The Riftbreaker one day - but you might have to play single-player for a while until that functionality is added.

The Riftbreaker Co-Op Mechanics

While co-op isn't here yet, we can take a look at EXOR Studios' other games to guess what features there may be. Their most recent release, X-Morph: Defence, featured both split-screen co-op, and online co-op. As such, you can team up with a friend regardless of whether they're in the room with you, or not.

One thing we don't know is how many players will be supported in The Riftbreaker's co-op. That's a tidbit that hasn't been announced by EXOR Studios, so we'll have to wait and see. However, you can guarantee that it'll be at least two-player co-op, or the mechanics simply wouldn't work.

All in all, it's good news for those thinking of purchasing The Riftbreaker. While co-op functionality isn't here yet, players have plenty of time to grind the game before they take to the battlefield with friends. After all that time to practice, you'll be able to craft expert bases and weaponry in no time. You and your co-op partners will be an unstoppable alien-killing machine - but you'll have to wait until the collaborative feature launches.
