A California, Missouri man was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and assault involving a special victim.
On Wednesday, the California Police Department requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control’s help for a death investigation, according to the probable cause statement.
The death investigation was at an apartment at 310 South East Street.
According to the court records, authorities had to force entry into the apartment and immediately saw the deceased victim laying on the floor. Law enforcement said they found James Collier in a bedroom with blood on his clothes.
When officers went to talk to Collier they said he became combative and head-butted a Moniteau County deputy.
According to the probable cause statement, Collier took responsibility for the homicide and said “this is my fault.”
Collier was taken to the California Police Department. While waiting for a formal interview, Collier was captured on body camera, sitting on the break room floor asking “I killed someone tonight, didn’t I?”
During an interview with detectives, Collier admitted to being in a physical altercation with the victim earlier in the day.
Collier said he couldn’t remember what happened but said he could “remember for some reason I was on top of him and then I was supposed to choke” and then he stopped talking.
According to detectives, Collier spoke at length about the voices in his head, visions he has, and how he’s always been told he was crazy.
Detectives said the victim had injuries that were consistent with being stuck in and about the face multiple times.
After complaining about his significantly swollen hand, Collier was taken to the hospital where X-rays determined he had suffered a “boxer’s fracture” to his hand.
