The emergence of Harvey Elliott and a concussion late in pre-season meant that midfielder Curtis Jones had to wait for his chance to impress this season after breaking into the first team in 2020-21.
Since Liverpool’s European match against AC Milan on September 15th, though, he’s played in—and impressed in—six games in a row in all competitions for the Reds, including making his 50th career appearance against Norwich in the League Cup.
“All my life I have dreamed of playing for the club so to even have made one appearance would, for me, have been amazing,” Jones said, reflecting on that achievement. “But 50? It’s mad, unbelievable.”
A few weeks later, and Jones is already up to 53 senior appearances for the Reds. And with a goal and three assists in games against Brentford, Porto, and Man City it almost feels like it’s underselling the impact he’s made to simply call them appearances.
Jones, though, says he isn’t exactly keeping track. He’s just worrying about performing in training and in matches, of taking his chances when they come and helping the team to win football matches.
“It was a really proud moment [but] I didn’t even know Norwich was going to be my 50th game,” he noted. “It’s not like I keep count of games. Each game just comes along and I’m not thinking ‘this is my 23rd game’ or whatever.”
As for what comes next, then, it’s perhaps not surprising that Jones doesn’t want to set any hard goals. Instead, he just wants to play—to play consistently and to deliver consistent performances that help the team when he does.
“I just want to stay in the team for as long as I can and get as much game time as I can,” Jones added about what he hopes comes next. “Obviously I want to get goals and assists and to help the team [but] that’s what I always try to do anyway.
“So I wouldn’t say I have a main goal, it’s more about being consistent and staying in the team for as long as I can. If that happens hopefully the goals and assists will come along anyway.”
